By recycling more you may be able to reduce your bin size for the solid waste (the Black bin) and thereby save money on your bill. The Recycle Cart can be set out every week for pick up to make recycling easy. The more you recycle the more room you may have in your solid waste bin.

Lithium batteries must be taped and cell phones must be wrapped in paper before being placed in the plastic bag.

You can also set out a maximum of two one-gallon, clear plastic containers of used motor oil next to your carts weekly on your collection day. Please tape the containers shut to avoid spills. Starting January 3, 2011, you will also be able to recycle used oil filters.

WBSD has entered into a new 10-year solid waste collection agreement Recology San Mateo which commences January 1, 2011.

Recology will provide franchised recycling, organics, and garbage services for residents, multi-family complexes, and commercial businesses. Annual on-call bulky goods collection services, used motor oil and filter recycling, and dry cell batteries (household batteries such as AAA, AA, B, C, D, 9V, and small “button” batteries; no liquid batteries such as automobile batteries) recycling will be provided to residents and multi-family complexes.

New carts are necessary in order to be serviced by the new vehicles. When the South Bay Waste Management Authority (SBWMA) issued its Request for Proposals, new collection containers were included in the proposal to ensure that the existing hauling company would not have an unfair financial advantage since they owned the carts.

The new carts have a full-color in-mold graphic on the lids with images to pictorially explain what goes in each cart.

Call Recology San Mateo at (650) 595-3900 and request a street/curbside exemption form to be mailed to you. A doctor’s letter or a certificate from the Department of Motor Vehicles must accompany the request.Recology shall Collect Carts Curbside unless: (i) the Occupant is provided a Special Handling Service exemption; or, (ii) the Customer has requested Backyard Collection Service and has agreed to pay the premium service Rate approved by the Agency. In such case, Contractor shall Collect Carts from and return Carts to the alternative service location (such as the side yard or backyard) specified by the Customer.

The Contractor shall make reasonable accommodations with regard to provision and servicing of Containers (e.g., Container size and type, placement of Containers for Collection, etc.) at no additional cost to Customers who meet the Agency’s Special Handling criteria. Customers who meet the Agency’s eligibility criteria shall be provided a written response within five (5) Business Days after receipt of the application. Unless otherwise directed by the Agency, Customers are eligible if they provide (i) evidence of their “handicap status” by the California Department of Motor Vehicles or (ii) evidence that no Occupant of the Residential Premises is physically able to place Carts Curbside for Collection.

Carts are to be placed street/curbside by 6:00 am on your collection day with their handles to the curb unless special arrangements have been made.
